Historical Note

The Brake Yard has an extensive history where this home is now built. For many years The Brake Yard was part of the St Mawes social and economic scene. Originally owned by J A Dotson, from the 1900’s there was stabling for six horses and a harness room which also served as the general meeting place. In those days the Dotson family also owned the Victory Inn and brewed the beer too. The final and vital use of the horse drawn transport was to supply the materials with which to brew and the conveyance of barrels of the beer to wherever they were needed. The Brake Yard was also the focal point for private transport and visitors to St Mawes would leave their horses and traps there during the day while visiting friends or relatives. The was long before the present approach road to the centre of the village was laid.

History Continued

During the first world war, many horses went from the Brake Yard to France. One horse returned from the journey called Tommy where he finished an honourable career on light duties in the peace and tranquillity of St Mawes Motor vehicles gradually took over and The Brake Yard became the home of the village fire engine. In 1972 The Brake Yard was acquired by the local building firm and continued to be used as garaging until 1989. A number of Cornish tradesmen who worked for this firm were employed building the four homes on this site. They are built in a traditional style, a fitting continuation of the history of this small part of St Mawes.

St Mawes

This enchanting south facing harbour village is found on the eastern side of the Fal Estuary, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with much of its surroundings owned by the National Trust. The village is centred round its quaint harbour, its own beaches and Castle. It has a good wide range of amenities, which are open all year, including butchers, bakers, convenience store, post office / newsagent, doctors, hairdressers, dentist, pharmacy, village hall, church, delicatessen and clothing shops including Fat Face. The village also has two public houses, and an excellent range of cafes, restaurants, art galleries, gift and ice cream shops. St Mawes has long been one of the West Country's more desirable and exclusive destinations, with Olga Polizzi's Hotel Tresanton and the recently re-modelled Idle Rocks Hotel both luring the rich and famous. The village has superbly varied and accessible sailing waters and an active sailing club.
